There are certain things I admire about order; the illusion of peace, the comfort of clean line, ease of movement. And things I loathe: denial of chaos, the shunning of nonlinear thought, confinement. Have you seen the way most eyes are drawn to order, and do not process discordance? Package it up, make it palatable, even if it's a lie. Is it danger or salvation?

The man in the story knelt on the sand and as he dug he lost his need to be a lawyer and forgot what he had to do to be a man in this world. His friends thought he was crazy but as his found possessions accumulated and his wealth deteriorated his happiness grew.

The sewing machine would hum for hours, and the only thing better than a mother's attention were the battered landscaped tins brimming with leftover fasteners. Navy anchors, rhinestone baubles, glinting tin, pale pink corrugation, the pulse of the Singer as inevitable as losing a button.

Inside an elderberry stem there is a styrofoam like core which hardens after days at sea into a substance to be scraped out and made into useful hollow things. This is not an elderberry stem; it is a piece of plastic, but its curves run parallel to that right angled shrub's.

I saw a photo today of workers cleaning up oil in the gulf. They formed a chain passing huge pristine white bags with such a tiny amount enclosed they didn't even sag. Their aprons, gloves, and the lips of the bags were startlingly clean. It reminded me of working on the Exxon cleanup, when our crew had to work with the "Ace team" because one of ours had passed out from the fumes and we had to evacuate the tiny island we were cleaning. The bags we packed with the ace team were filled with clean rocks. That is how they measured success; by how many bags were loaded, and by calling them oil filled. Crisp white bones to hide a dying body.

One can barely tell that this piece of wood came from a knot. Before it became a salt soaked soft pretzel like thing floating who knows where, it was part of a larger work whose job it was to fill nostrils with sweet promise and sticky memories of spring cottonwoods by the sea.

Deep in woods steeped in memories of WWII there is an abandoned pet cemetary, professionaly engraved and fond of cats. Next to the locked and wilting cabin rests a Quonset almost unrecognizable in the undergrowth. It's housed a spectrum in its curved body; communications, humans, now the infinite life, death, and conversations of the rain forest.

I don't want to know what comes in the prettily colored bottles. I just want to feel the thin metal cap between my roughened fingertips, and imagine it falling into the sea from a silk covered armoire, having spilled its contents into the palm of a sweet scented young girl, or patted onto the powdered skin of a baby.

The metal/paper base is bent and curved to form wavelike undulations which change depth in different views.

Sometimes while walking underneath spruce trees living next to the beach I'll find a bit of birch bark that has lain there long enough to grow lichens on its surface. They grow upon it as if it had been part of the landscape forever. Life lost, life retrieved.

Japanese fish boxes abounded in our childhood home. They held nails, screws, odds and ends. The brightly painted red symbols shift in my memory from a different language to one of happy memories digging through dusty treasures. Beach pebble and other detritus mingle. Aluminum behind the painting makes it light and sturdy.

It looked like a delicate onion skin lying on a rock but it turned out to be a tiny fish exoskeleton. That same walk I found a beautifully pink squeeze bottle, who knows what it once housed in its shell. Mystery. Danger. This is mounted on 4 separate oak pieces which hang down like an antique children's toy.

After painting, the metal panels on this piece were cut and woven together in imitation of the way the rope snakes around its subject. There are pieces of dirt embedded in the paint to mimic the detritus that sticks to all things outside.

There's a grass seed pod that becomes a rattle when one snaps it from its thin post and away from the brittle crowd set ablaze by an orange sun. The painting is bent over a wooden backing to form a gentle arc.

An inch thick piece of plastic floats up on the tide- where does it come from- the lip of a fish tote, part of a downed boat? The questions that a small bit of plastic can answer are as large as those of a chunk of quartz whiling away the centuries.

Gray is the color of mist,
of uncertain shadows, and faded bones. The deer bone and the crab shell lie in a separate but companionable silence. The portrait is curved and fastened to the wooden base with fine black nails.

One via sea, one via land- crab shell on bark. The bubbly texture of the crab's shell is caressed by the soft chalk drawing of an unknown tree. The first painting is folded and attached to the second.

Often in the past, less often in these environmentally aware times, we found shards of fish baskets tangled in seaweed. They seem to embody the spirit of hard work and thrift present in so many communities, with the holes lined up like coin slots in a collector's board.

I imagine this is how a chalky shell looks from underneath its sandy bed. The piece is very smooth and soft aside from chalk emphasizing the shell texture and bits of sand embedded in the paint.

Aluminum can tops erode recognizably. The old pop tops are almost as rare as glass balls. This arrangement is unyielding and free of texture, fitting the thin and hard detritus it speaks of.

Man and nature made skeletons shift side by side in a tidal surge. The large blue basket piece is the actual object inserted between the metal/paper panels, the other objects are painted and drawn.

Blades of beach grass windblown into a skirt of sand. A tree cut by loggers but too small to harvest lies harboring moss in its exposed end. The metal skin on this piece is bent into a half cylinder to express its dual nature when viewed from either side.

MOONSNAIL ON URCHIN

Where I live Moonsnails are rare.
Once I found an enormous one which I gave to
a long gone friend.
Its smooth full surface gives away nothing.
Like the moon it is inscrutable.

I FOUND A DEER SKULL IN THE WILD ROSES.

We headed down the usual path
through willows and alders to the hidden beach.
After jumping over a tiny creek I backed into the shelter of a spruce
and peered into the rose bushes.
There it was,
teeth shining in the dusk.
